Doctors are moving to a subscription-based model amid skyrocketing health care costs in the US

Frustrated with rising health care costs in the U.S., doctors are turning away from traditional insurance and adopting a subscription model for his or her patients.

Yahoo Finance reported that healthcare providers do starting oppose a system that seemingly puts profit over quality patient re. As a result, increasingly physicians are using direct primary care (DPC), a model that eliminates insurance and allows patients to pay their physicians directly in fixed monthly or annual fees.

“It’s a bit like Netflix” – Dr. Chris McCarthy, co-founder of Palmetto Proactive in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he said . “You can watch as many shows as you want or no shows at all. This means you can come to the office as often as you need and there are no barriers.”

Under DPC, patients pay a flat monthly fee, typically starting from $50 to $150, that offers them unlimited access to their primary care physician for services akin to routine tests, urgent care and physician visits – eliminating co-pays, deductibles and high associated costs with traditional health care.

“I believe that health care does not take the patient into account,” said Dr. Sandra Rosado. “It’s just business and that’s the saddest thing.”

This model goals to disrupt the traditional system by eliminating insurance and offering a subscription-based approach that delivers higher health care. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, DPC reduces financial barriers to routine health care by fostering stronger relationships between patients and providers.

“We will apply stitches if someone cuts their finger or if they have certain skin conditions. If we can do this, we will tackle skin cancer and we will do it,” Dr. McCarthy said.

Some firms, akin to Hub City Hospitality in Spartanburg, are implementing DPC as a cost-effective healthcare solution for his or her employees. According to Vice President of Human Resources John Trone, Hub City covers 50% of the DPC fee, so employees only pay $28 a month for insurance.

While DPC is a promising alternative to the traditional insurance-based system, it solves only a small a part of a much broader problem. Health insurance stays a pressing issue for a lot of Americans. 2022 test found that greater than 100 million adults – about 4 in 10 – struggle with debt due to medical or dental bills.
