ByteDance is laying off hundreds of TikTok workers as it transitions to AI content moderation
ByteDance-owned TikTok is laying off hundreds of workers, mostly in Malaysia, according to the corporate Reuters. The cuts come as the social network increasingly turns to AI to moderate content.
While TikTok didn’t provide a precise number, it did say that fewer than 500 people were affected.
According to Reuters, the corporate says it is making the changes as part of an effort to strengthen its global content moderation operating model. TikTok currently uses each automatic detection and human moderators to review content shared on the social network.
TikTok didn’t respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
The social network’s latest round of cuts follows a series of downgrades earlier this yr. In April corporate cut over 250 jobs in Ireland and in May indicated reports that it is laying off roughly 1,000 employees across its operations and marketing teams. In January, TikTok laid off 60 sales and promoting employees.
