The 2025 Met Gala’s theme is Black menswear – celebrity co-chairs include Pharrell, A$AP Rocky and Colman Domingo

The 2025 Met Gala shall be a celebration of black men in fashion. On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced next 12 months’s theme and co-chairmen on the primary Monday in May, also often known as fashion’s biggest night.

For the primary time in its history, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition shall be devoted exclusively to racing, with a rare highlight on men, under the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s bookSlaves of Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Stylization of Black Diasporic Identity”, the exhibition will present paintings, photography and clothing celebrating black style from the 18th century to the current.

“This is an important moment for the country. For being aware of where we are and where we want to be. … We are at a crossroads as we consider what it means to be here together for all of us,” said Miller, who shall be the guest curator of the exhibition Washington Post.. “I’m glad we can talk about complicated history, about slavery and revolution.”

The 2025 Met Gala exhibition will dive into the world of black dandies, a term used to explain black men who put emphasis on their appearance and have a rebellious approach to fashion, in keeping with experts. To have fun black dandyism, Anna Wintour, who has chaired the Met Gala for a long time, invited black celebrities to hitch her as co-chairs of the long-lasting fashion event. Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton and Colman Domingo were chosen for his or her unique sartorial visions. For Williams, the present creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear, this shall be his second visit as co-chair of the Met Gala. Additionally, this 12 months LeBron James will join because the gala’s honorary chairman, making his first appearance on the Met Gala steps.

In addition to the celebrity co-chairs, Black designers, and especially Black menswear designers, are expected to take center stage on the exhibition. Beyond the cultural connection to the subject, these designers shall be recognized for the several ways they approach problems with identity of their craft. Highlighting the work of designers similar to the late Virgil Abloh, Martine Rose and Grace Wales Bonner, Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, says 2025 “marks a really important step in the diversification of our exhibitions and collections.”

“The main reason for focusing on black designers is because they have a historical approach,” he added. “They design with the history of Black representation in mind. It’s about legacy. Often it is about their own legacy.”

The official dress code for the 2025 Met Gala shall be published early next 12 months.
