Black Beauty Roster has been influencing the sweetness space since 2020 — connecting the entertainment industry with beauty professionals. Additionally, founded by Maude Okrah Huntertheir annual luncheon is a chance to have a good time and recognize Black beauty innovators, content creators, and leaders.
This yr, their Icon Award went to Grammy Award-winning singer Ciara, who sported short hair with numerous curls, a light-weight foundation, and a nude lip. “We’re honored to shine a spotlight on industry pioneers who are driving inclusivity in beauty, fashion, and media, and we’re honored to present Ciara with our Beauty Icon Award,” Hunter tells ESSENCE. “She has continually pushed boundaries, setting new standards of excellence. Her commitment to diversity and empowerment resonates deeply with BBR’s mission, making her a true icon and inspiration to the industry.”
In addition to Ciara, who won the highest prize, other honorees included Zabrina Matiru, who received the Department Head Award; James Vincent, winner of the Allyship Award; Naeemah Lafond, winner of the Trailblazer Award; Patricia Bright, winner of the Creator Award; and Monique Rodriguez, winner of the Pioneer Award.
Meanwhile, luncheon attendees also got here to rock the look. Think: daring eyeshadow colours in shades of purple, pink, and blue. Bold pouts and glossy red lips were also big hits.
We can also’t forget to say our favourite hairstylists Vernon Francois — who arrived in a sheer top that showed off his killer abs — and Jawara, who made an appearance. Also featured within the standout panels were influencer and sweetness expert Blake Newby, who chatted with Flaviana Matata and Cari Champion about all things black girl magic.
After one other successful event, Hunter says, “we’d like to thank our NYFW partners: WME, Salon Centirc, Tarte, Orbie, and Ulta for their continued support and for championing diversity at the forefront of the industry.”
