Supreme Court Orders Ban on Sale of Elon Musk’s X in Brazil
Brazil’s highest court on Friday ordered the immediate suspension of Platform X nationwide after a months-long legal battle with Elon Musk’s social media company over content moderation, based on Bloomberg.
The court added that anyone using a VPN to access the X platform can be subject to a high-quality of 50,000 reais ($8,900) per day. It is unclear, nevertheless, how the ruling can be enforced.
Earlier this month, X shut down its operations in Brazil in protest of court orders to remove accounts that allegedly spread misinformation. At the time, the corporate said Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes “threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we did not comply with his censorship orders.” Moraes warned X earlier this week that Brazil would block the service if the corporate didn’t provide the name of a legal representative in the country.
“We soon expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes to issue an order to shut down X in Brazil, simply because we will not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents,” the Global X team told tweet Friday morning.
The platform says it’s going to publish the demands of the Brazilian Supreme Court in the approaching days and is not going to comply with its orders.
