Tyrese, Rickey Smiley, D-Nice and more receive honorary degrees
Tyrese Gibson is now Dr. Tyrese Gibson. He doesn’t take the title flippantly. Along with several other celebrities, including Rickey Smiley, D-Nice, Raheem Devaugn, Claudia Jordan, Natasha Leath and Andrea Kelly, Tyrese received the honorary doctorate on August 25. He also received a lifetime achievement award from President Joe Biden for his outstanding achievements in music. The singer-actor was supported by his partner Zelie Timothy and reflected on receiving the distinguished honor.
“In moments like that, I feel like I could never imagine something like this happening without my mom being there to see it,” Gibson said. BLACK ENTREPRENEURSHIP.
“So it’s hard to celebrate when you see or experience a moment like that that seems so beautiful and life-changing, and it’s that one hug that I wish I could go out and get.”
The tribute was presented by Leaders Esteem Christian Bible University, Founded in 2020by Dr. Verna Caddie, “in the middle of a pandemic,” after receiving her doctorate in Christian education. The founder believes that paying tribute to those that do exceptional work and serve their communities is now due.
Recently, the transmission honorary titles were under scrutiny, while critics expressing such opinions about celebrities and distinguished people jump to the front of the category,

According to Brandeis University, honorary degrees dates back to the fifteenth century, and the University of Oxford is the primary registered institution to grant this honour. Honorary degrees should not have the force of matriculated degrees, as academic institutions and universities dispense with the requirement of a level. They are what they are saying they’re – honorary degrees, awarded for honour, not scholarship.
“We are an accredited Bible university,” Caddie said. TO BE. “I know a lot of people ask this, but we are accredited, we have multiple accreditations and we have a good membership reputation as well.”
Despite what critics say, Caddie’s initiative is in step with the standard practice of recognizing outstanding individuals for his or her special contributions. the awards ceremony was a proud moment for honorees like music producer Sean Garrett, artist Claudia Jordan, and Natasha Leath, a life coach and spiritual advisor. Leath is inspired by the popularity and hopes to do more in her business and practice.
Towanda Braxton, singer and honorary degree recipient, spoke with TO BE concerning the positive sides of honorary titles.
“I think it’s amazing,” Braxton said.
“You don’t always have to be physically at school to be honored.”
Braxton continued, “You know, I just think there are two different ways to get an honorary degree. I think some people earn it from the ed, from the educational side, but I also believe people deserve it from the professional side, especially since they’ve been in the business for a long time.”
The work of physicians who’re each scientists and practitioners has not gone unnoticed by Gibson. The “Lately” singer acknowledged medical professionals while celebrating receiving an honorary degree.
“I felt honored to be able to thank all the healthcare workers, surgeons, doctors, nurses and true, selfless men and women, angels, who risk everything every day to keep us healthy and safe for our family, giving birth to babies every day,” Gibson said.
“What a life? What a choice, to wake up every day and be selfless. If I want to be like anyone, I want to be like them.”
“Today I get to pretend,” Gibson joked.
“I can prescribe Pedialyte.”
