The first trailer for the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “The Piano Lesson” was released on Wednesday.

The Netflix film is directed and co-written by Malcolm Washington, the youngest son of Denzel Washington. “The Piano Lesson” is a family affair produced by Denzel Washington and stars John David Washington as Boy Willie Charles. The forged also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins.

“The Piano Lesson” explores “the intergenerational dynamics of identity, resilience, and transcendence — revealing surprising truths about how we perceive the past and who gets to define our legacy,” in line with the official synopsis.

The film tells the story of Boy Willie Charles, who desires to “build the family fortune by selling the prized family piano.” His sister, Berniece Charles (Deadwyler), “will do anything to preserve the one vestige of the family legacy,” while their uncle (Jackson) “tries to mediate, but even he can’t keep the ghosts of the past at bay.”

Malcolm Washington said in an announcement that he desired to “honor the spirit of August Wilson and the legacy he left for all of us” with the film, co-written by Virgil Williams.

“A legacy that thrives on the strength of Berniece played by Danielle Deadwyler, the dynamism of Boy Willie played by John David Washington and the understated genius of Doaker played by Samuel L. Jackson,” said Malcolm Washington in a press release.

“Every family has a story, stories from the past that shape the present; an origin story. Ultimately, that story is much bigger than me and my family—like the black American experience, it’s an interconnected web of stories that span space and time,” the director added. “I hope that when people watch our film, they see themselves on screen and hear the voices of their ancestors calling out to them, offering peace and protection.”

The film “The Piano Lesson” will premiere in chosen cinemas on November 8, and will probably be available on Netflix from November 22.
