Nancy Pelosi slams California’s artificial intelligence bill, calling it ‘ill-informed’
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi released statement Late yesterday evening, she voiced her opposition to SB 1047, a California bill that seeks to manage artificial intelligence.
“Many of us in Congress believe SB 1047 is well-intentioned but misinformed,” Pelosi said. She noted that other Bay Area congressmen — Zoe Lofgren, Anna Eshoo and Ro Khanna — have expressed concerns concerning the bill, which she described as “more harmful than helpful.”
The bill was recently amended to handle concerns from critics, including AI firm Anthropic, and now heads to the California Assembly for a vote. Because it’s a state bill, Pelosi and others in Congress don’t have any official say — though Pelosi’s seniority and profile likely give her opinion weight amongst California politicians.
“AI came out of California,” she said. “We need to have legislation that is a model for the country and the world. We have an opportunity and an obligation to allow small businesses and academia — not big tech — to dominate.”
