Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who has since moved to a greener and maybe more dangerous pastures, recently told an audience of Stanford students that “Google decided that work-life balance, leaving early, and working remotely were more important than winning.” Apparently, that heated opinion wasn’t intended for a wider audience, because Stanford — which posted the video to YouTube this week — made the video of the event private today.

It wouldn’t be surprising if it was on the talent’s request. “I made some bad comments about Google and their hours,” Schmidt said in an emailed statement to TechCrunch. “I regret my mistake.”

Several news publications have already done this publish headlines concerning the film and 1.4 million people I watched the clip Schmidt criticizing Google’s distant work methods on the X platform.

At one other point within the film, Schmidt tells the audience to maintain what he says a secret, then feigns surprise when his interviewer points to cameras within the room. At one other point, he tells the audience that AI startups can steal IP and hire smart lawyers to sort it out later once they’ve built a successful product. It’s likely that the previous Google CEO didn’t know your complete interview could be posted online.
