xAI Releases Grok-2, Adds Image Generation on X
Property of Elon Musk launched the Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini in beta with improved reasoning. The recent Grok AI model can now generate images on the X social network, although access to Grok is currently limited to Premium and Premium+ users on X.
xAI announced that each Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini can be found for X users in beta.
“We are pleased to release an early preview of Grok-2, a significant step forward from our previous Grok-1.5 model, which offered pioneering capabilities in chat, coding, and reasoning. At the same time, we are introducing Grok-2 mini, Grok-2’s small but capable sibling. An early version of Grok-2 has been tested on the LMSYS leaderboard under the name ‘sus-column-r,’” reads xAI’s blog post about Grok-2.
Musk’s AI company also plans to make each models available to developers via its enterprise API later this month.
Early user-generated images suggest that Grok’s image-generating feature has no safeguards against creating images of political figures — and lots of users are currently making the most of that fact. However, with the US presidential election approaching, the corporate will likely face pressure so as to add restrictions to those features.

Little is understood about Grok 2’s actual capabilities presently. Application researcher (and apparently X-feature tester) Nima Owji has claimed that Grok 2 is healthier at generating code, writing, and creating messages, although there’s little evidence to support this claim. Without any restrictions on image generation, Grok could easily develop into a tool for creating disinformation on X and other platforms. It can be unclear whether Grok-powered images contain any metadata indicating they’re generated by AI.

xAI noted that the corporate plans to implement Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini with AI-powered features on X, including improved search capabilities, post analytics, and reply features. This could mean that X could introduce AI-powered replies. The company also said it’ll release a preview of multimodal understanding as a core a part of the Grok experience on X and the API.
