Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Forms PAC to Support Kamala Harris
Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign got a lift this week when her sorority formed a political motion committee.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority PAC, Inc., or AKA 1908 PAC, was announced Monday in response to Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsement of Harris. Now, through the PAC, the historically black sorority can accept donations of up to $5,000 from its members and their families to support federal campaigns and political parties, according to reports.
Kiahna Davis, regional director of the sorority’s central region, is listed because the PAC treasurer. With the move, the organization becomes the primary black sorority to launch its own official PAC. It follows other Greek organizations with official federal fundraising operations, including its ally Divine Nine Phi Beta Sigma, which operates its own PAC, and the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee, founded by fraternity and sorority leaders in 2005 to support candidates “who defend and enhance the fraternity and sorority experience.”
Harris is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., which she refers to as her “family.” She most recently attended the national meeting of one other Divine Nine sorority, Zeta Phi Beta’s Grand Boulé, earlier this summer.
Since becoming the Democratic nominee after Biden left office, each Divine Nine president has pledged in a press release to “confront this critical moment in history with an unprecedented, coordinated campaign of voter registration, education, and mobilization.”
Harris has never had an issue getting support from her association. When was announced As Biden’s 2020 vice presidential candidate, their campaign received an avalanche of donations totaling $19.08, harkening back to the 12 months the association was founded at Howard University.
After the presidential campaign officially launched, Harris became the primary to host a White House event for Divine Nine leaders. With a network of greater than two million Divine Nine alumni, it represents a major political force that each parties are eager to mobilize ahead of the November election.
