Illinois nail salon technician allegedly tells woman she doesn’t serve black people, white customer rushes to employee’s defense, gets hit with a quick-fire retort, video shows
A black woman in a video she posted on TikTok claims she was refused service at a beauty salon due to her race.
TikTok user @kamyacantgetadoll posted a video on her account on Saturday showing the consequences of her visit to a client at a beauty salon.
The film begins with an Asian manicurist performing a manicure on a white client.
“So you really don’t serve black people?” asks a black woman nail technician.
The nail technician looks up, however the white customer interrupts and tells her, “Don’t answer, she’s recording you. If you don’t want to be recorded, don’t answer.”
“But you heard her say it,” a black woman tells a white woman. in a popular film.
“I know, but it’s illegal to record someone in Illinois,” the white woman says, citing a law in that state that requires two parties to consent.
“Discrimination is illegal,” the black woman replies.
Most U.S. states implement single-party consent laws that allow a person to record a conversation or meeting with someone without that person’s consent. This allows people to secretly record interactions with others, with some exceptions.
However, in Illinois, under the wiretapping statute, it is unlawful to video or audio record a private conversation without the consent of all parties involved. Anyone who violates this law might be charged with a crime or subject to civil liability.
This law has been amended several times since its passage in 1961, so there are some exceptions that allow recording in certain situations where a number of parties don’t consider the conversation or interaction to be private. Additionally, Illinois residents can record police interactions and encounters with people they reasonably suspect are committing a crime.
The black client posted one other one Hi incident, protesting against a white client’s defense of a nail technician.
“You’re witnessing what she’s saying,” the black customer might be heard saying. “You just don’t have these kinds of problems in your life.”
“If you’re not happy, go somewhere else,” a white customer says firmly.
Numerous comments expressed frustration and outrage over the way in which a black client was treated during her visit to the salon.
“Time to protest… lock them up. Shame on other women who don’t stand up for justice,” said one commenter.
“This is heartbreaking. Racism is everywhere, so no matter how much we protest or do this, it will always be there whether we like it or not,” one other person wrote.
Some black women have also posted accounts of comparable experiences that they had at local beauty salons.
“When I first walked into the nail salon, they told me they didn’t do long nails. I was confused. No “hello, how can I provide help to” or anything,” one person wrote.
“They won’t say that at my house, they’ll just let you stand there until you leave… I can’t make this up,” one other said.
Some social media users have claimed the business within the video is a Granite City beauty salon, but Atlanta Black Star has not been able to independently confirm that. Many viewers have written negative reviews on the salon’s Google page for the reason that video went viral.
Atlanta Black Star representatives also contacted the user who posted the video for more details in regards to the incident.
