Roy Wood Jr. is aware of the joke when it comes to 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The comedian began a trending topic on X (Twitter), #WhenITurnedBlack, following Trump’s false comments that Vice President Kamala Harris “accidentally turned black” just a few years ago. Wood took to social media on Wednesday to jokingly ask his followers once they turned black.

“Now we know Kamala’s courageous story,” the comedian said written next to the movie Trump speaking about Harris on the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. “When did the rest of you ‘go’ black? How old were you? Where were you when blackness finally took over your body? Share your stories. It’s a safe space. #WhenITurnedBlack.”

Wood’s supporters quickly responded to his call, sending one Comment by user X“I turned black the first time I played the big joker in spades. That was a pretty momentous occasion #WhenITurnedBlack.”

Elle Duncan of ESPN he wrote“I was at a party once. And before I knew it, I was overcome by the spirit of the dance. Struck…not by Cupid’s arrow, but rather…by his shuffling. I knew then…that I was black.”

Another X user, LaBrina, he commented“#WhenITurnedBlack I remember in the 80s my mom came home from her day job, took us to the store and said, ‘When we come in here, you don’t want anything, you don’t need anything, you don’t ask for anything’!!!”

Wood explained his decision to start using the hashtag in an announcement to Everyday Beastsaying, “Overall, I still believe this election is about Kamala’s ability to win over voters (undecided and apathetic) and not about Trump losing voters.”

“Biden has passed the baton to her, and Kamala now has to run like the wind because nothing seems to be stopping Trump — not even honest questions from the great NABJ journalists who responded when they could,” Wood added.

Wood added that Harris’ team “had a response ready quicker than Kendrick’s criticism,” referring to statement released by Harris’ campaign during which they addressed Trump’s lies about her race.

“Trump hurled personal attacks and insults at Black journalists the same way he has done throughout his presidency — while he failed Black families and made it so the entire country had to dig itself out of the ditch he left us in,” the statement said. “Donald Trump has already proven he cannot unite America, so he is trying to divide us.”

During a convention appearance Wednesday, Trump questioned Harris’ race, suggesting she isn’t actually black. The vice chairman, the kid of an Indian-American mother and a Jamaican-American father, identifies as each black and South Asian.

“I didn’t know she was black until she became black a few years ago,” Trump told NABJ members. “And now she wants to be known as black. So I don’t know if she’s Native American or black?”
