Dr. Umar Johnson accosted by airport police over complaint of ‘black man in plaid shirt’ talking to himself

Dr. Umar Johnson is searching for the person or individuals who called the police on him while he was waiting for a flight to Europe.

The popular black pan-Africanist was continue to exist Instagram on the terminal gate of his Amsterdam-bound flight, speaking to his multiple million followers, when he was approached by two law enforcement officers, interrupting his stream of consciousness.

According to Dr. Umar, this happened to him for the primary time in his life.

He told his fans, “The Black Party is back,” but before he could proceed, officers showed up.

Like a shark, he growled and asked the officers, “How are we doing?”

The policeman asked, “Is everything okay?”

“So, what’s going on?” he asked, not moving a muscle and directing his energy toward just in case things took a turn for the more severe.

The policeman told Dr. Umar that that they had received a call from someone on the airport a few black man in a plaid shirt who was talking to himself as if he was in a mental crisis. This made them feel uneasy.

“Me?” the Philadelphia native asked, then laughed — knowing his fans were watching the entire thing continue to exist social media.

As officers continued to explain the health check, he said, “I’m Dr. Umar Johnson. I’m just waiting for a flight to Amsterdam. It wasn’t me. I’m fine.”

Without letting up, he asked the policemen, “Did they send you specifically to me?”

“No, they said that a black man in a plaid shirt… could talk to himself,” he continued, before the founder of the Frederick Douglass Marcus Garvey Academy said, “Oh, no, I’m a psychologist. I’m completely sane.”

The officers said they were “just doing” their job and checking to see if there was any crisis on the gate.

Dr. Umar told his audience, “They sent the police. Two white men in full uniforms hit… They sent the police to the Prince of Pan-Africanism. And I’m talking about spirituality. You see, brothers and sisters, did you see what just happened? They said they got a call that a black man in a plaid shirt was talking to himself. Lord, have mercy!”

The activist looked directly into the camera and asked who had sent the officers to him. He wondered if it was actually a white man who had called the police on him.

This is spot on published posted the clip on their Instagram page, and plenty of people commented on the incident.

Someone wrote, “Holy shit, it’s illegal to talk to yourself now.” Another added, “So they’ve never seen someone vlog live?”

Someone asked, “So all a black man has to do is put on a plaid shirt and talk calmly to himself to pose a threat.”

Another user X explained that that is all too common amongst many black men and ladies.

“It’s the oldest trick in the book. It’s a signal that people don’t think you fit in a space,” they said. he wrote“I was walking through the space on my way home from a meeting at the college on Sunday. I looked up and noticed a police car following me down the road. I was on the crosswalk. I ignored it and kept walking. The police car pulled off the road onto the crosswalk, blocking my path. The officer told me that someone had reported a ‘black male walking erratically down the road.’ He asked if I was that person. I said you had been watching me for at least two minutes on the crosswalk, not the road. Do I look erratic? He asked for my ID and ran it through the database. He then told me to get home safely. I told him I hoped you would find a nonexistent black male walking erratically. I kept walking.”

Another said: “Even if he sat there and talked to himself, what does that mean to them? People need to learn to mind their own fucking business. It’s fucking free!”

“Out of all the black people at the airport you picked the right n***a on the right day,” wrote one other.

Another user X chimed in: writing“Nobody is immune to this system of white supremacy. They called the police on you because someone doesn’t like black people being around.”

Dr. Umar, a board-certified school psychologist who earned his doctorate from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, felt that a potentially unpleasant situation had been mitigated.

Many social media users raved about how he managed to comically use the incident to emphasize his message about how people discriminate against Black and Brown people out of fear or because they do not like his pro-Black message.

The video doesn’t show any resolution or actual departure of the officers. It is unclear whether Dr. Umar complained about profiling beyond his addressing his supporters.
