The first trailer for the upcoming Milli Vanilli biopic, titled “Girl You Know It’s True,” was released Tuesday morning.

The film, written and directed by Simon Verhoeven, will follow the R&B duo’s “lightning-fast rise and tabloid-fueled fall,” in response to a press release obtained by People. Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali will play Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, respectively, while Matthias Schweighöfer will play music producer Frank Farian. Graham Rogers and Bella Dayne round out the solid.

Milli Vanilli’s Morvan and Pilatus became overnight sensations in the ’80s with the release of “Girl You Know It’s True” and “Blame It on the Rain.” Their success was short-lived, nonetheless, when it was discovered that the duo had not sung any of Milli Vanilli’s songs, as a substitute pretending to sing along to other artists’ voices. The Recording Academy revoked their Grammy Award for Best New Artist, in response to People magazine, and the duo largely disappeared from the highlight.

Morvan is returning to Hollywood with the release of the biopic. The 58-year-old is a co-producer on the film, serving as a consultant, in response to People magazine. Pilatus’ sister, Carmen Pilatus, is representing him on the film as an associate producer following the singer’s death in 1998 at age 33. Milli Vanilli’s former assistant Todd Headlee and Ingrid “Milli” Segieth are also credited as associate producers on the film, together with one in all Milli Vanilli’s real-life vocalists, Brad Howell.

“We are thrilled to release a film that explores the true story of the success and controversy surrounding Milli Vanilli’s legacy,” Tony Piantedosi, vp of acquisitions at Vertical, the film’s distributor, said in an announcement to People magazine.

“Simon has created an extraordinary story in collaboration with the people who lived through this ordeal,” Piantedosi added. “It’s a rare pleasure to pull back the curtain and show viewers the real story behind the shocking headlines.”

“Girl You Know It’s True” hits theaters on August 9.
