Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Boots Riley and Danielle Brooks among 487 invited to film academy
Actors Lily Gladstone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Catherine O’Hara, and filmmakers Cord Jefferson, Boots Riley and “RRR” director SS Rajamouli are among the lucky few who’ve been invited to join the film academy.
A complete of 487 artists, including actors, directors, costume designers, publicists and executives, received invitations this yr, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday. Those who agree will give you the option to vote within the Oscar race.
If all those invited to the 2024 class say yes, the academy could have 9,934 voting members and will likely be 35% women, 20% from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities and 20% international.
Among the invited guests are 19 Oscar winners, including best documentary winner Mstyslav Chernov (“20 Days in Mariupol”) and “Anatomy of a Fall” director Justine Triet, in addition to 71 nominees, including Sandra Hüller, “The Color Purple” Danielle Brooks, “Past Lives” director Celine Song and “Oppenheimer” production designer Ruth De Jong.

Jefferson, who wrote and directed “American Fiction,” was among eight people invited to multiple chapters. In his case it was directing and writing, and like his peers, he could have to select which branch to join. Song and Triet must make the identical decision.
“We are thrilled to welcome this year’s class of new members to the Academy,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a press release. “These incredibly talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our film community.”
Other actors invited include Jessica Alba, Greta Lee and her “Past Lives” co-star Teo Yoo, Tia Carrere and Stephanie Beatriz. Directors include Alice Diop, Lila Avilés, Fede Álvarez, AV Rockwell, Emma Seligman and David Yates.
Guest executives include Duncan Crabtree from Ireland, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League and Kim Yutani, programming director of the Sundance Film Festival.
The 97th Academy Awards will likely be held on March 2 in Los Angeles.
