Barry Sanders claims to have experienced a heart-related ‘health scare’
DETROIT (AP) – Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders says he “experienced a health scare related to my heart” last weekend.
“It was unexpected and reminded us how important it is to be vigilant about our physical well-being, even when we feel fine,” the previous Detroit Lions player said in a statement posted on social media on Friday.
The Lions released their very own social media post saying, “Get well soon, Barry.”
“I am grateful to the wonderful doctors, nurses and other health care workers for providing me with the care I need,” Sanders said. “My family and I are grateful for your prayers and support during this time. As advised by my doctors, I am taking this opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
Sanders, who turns 56 next month, was a six-time All-Pro while playing for the Lions from 1989-98 before abruptly retiring. He has 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns in his profession, including 2,053 yards within the 1997 season where he won MVP honors.
In 2004, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Sanders spent his entire profession with the Lions, who chosen him with the third overall pick within the 1989 NFL draft after a Heisman Trophy-winning season at Oklahoma State.
