What does sunlight smell like? Louis Vuitton creative director Pharrell Williams and master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud collaborated on the brand’s latest fragrance, which is a poetic answer to this query. Created by LVERS, which hits stores today, it combines the metaphorical scent of photosynthesis with the summer sun.

“The sense of smell represents something that people don’t realize – it’s the glue that holds together every memory you’ve ever had.” Williams tells LVERS is Williams’ first fragrance with Louis Vuitton since he became creative director last yr, and has been in the works since his first show last June. Hours after his debut, the Grammy-winning musician spoke with Belletruda about creating an fragrant fragrance that embodies the energy of the sun.

The key to bottling this fragrance were the woody, green notes coming from Galbanum resin. The pheromone extracted from the Iranian gum plant is instantly harking back to nature, mixed with hot, spicy, yet fresh notes of ginger. While LVERS is a mid-summer scent with notes of cedarwood, sandalwood and amber, Williams described the perfume as having a “sweeter” and “blue” aroma. “It smells like an elegant, elevated version of something I’m familiar with,” he added.

Speaking of which, as a Virginia native (known for his saying, “Virginia is for lovers”), Williams combined his home state with Louis Vuitton’s LV logo to create the fragrance’s name. Throughout the creative process, Williams sought to reply an issue he repeatedly asks those near him: “If the sun shone on you, what would you do with the light?” This is her way of creating it clear that wearing a light-weight, sensual, creamy and spicy scent is an incredible start.
