Sabrina Elba uses African ingredients in her new line of skin care products
Sabrina Elba has launched a new skincare line inspired by the African ingredients her mother used when she was growing as much as combat acne-prone skin.
UN Goodwill Ambassador and entrepreneur yes connected and her husband Idris Elba introduce their new skin care brand, S’Able Labs. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the brand uses African botanicals to combat skin issues that folks with melaninated skin often struggle with. Their signature African skincare, A-Beauty line, includes antioxidants similar to turmeric, okra, qasil and black cumin.
Among the skin conditions S’Able Labs deals with is hyperpigmentation, which Sabrina experienced as a teen and tried to treat with Sephora acids and products. However, the products only made her condition worse, forcing her mother to embark on her own natural skin care regimen using the traditions of her Somali heritage. The results protected Sabrina’s skin from breakouts.
“I grew up watching (my mom) make (her) own products and face masks and DIYs, all in the kitchen,” she says. “I think that was probably, I mean definitely an influence that led me to add these African botanicals to the (S’Able Labs) skincare range.”
Now she is worked up to collaborate with her actor husband to launch a line of skincare products made with African ingredients which have been passed down through the generations, honoring their heritage.
“The fact that we come from East Africa and (Idris) comes from West Africa, and these kinds of continental motifs, African motifs, pan-African motifs… I realized and kind of became addicted to these stories and heritage elements around these ingredients and these customs ” says Sabrina.
The new product lines include Okra Facial Serum, Qasil Cleanser, Black Seed Toner, Boabab Moisturizer and Qasil Exfoliating Mask. Prices range from $24 to $75.
“Behind it is honesty and efficiency,” says Sabrina. “I want to show people that African ingredients are powerful.”
