Miss Universe Philippines crowns Chelsea Manalo as the first black queen

Chelsea Manalo made history on May 22 when she became the first black woman crowned Miss Universe Philippines.

The Filipino American, representing the province of Bulacan north of Manila, won over 52 competitors. CNN reported Manalo’s breakthrough victory sparks a broader conversation about expanding beauty standards in the Philippines after years of adapting to Western ideals.

Manalo used the Miss Universe platform to make clear her own experiences. In a YouTube video aired by , the pageant queen, who began her modeling profession at the age of 14, described her life as a “rollercoaster ride.” In the “HER STORY” section, she shared how she grew up being a victim of bullying due to her skin and hair type. “My self-confidence dropped and I started to become indifferent.” However, Manalo credits her support system with helping her “understand her individuality” and realizing that her beauty is extraordinary.

Looking in the mirror, Manalo spoke affirmations, declaring herself as a lady who embraces herself and knows her value. The label highlighted Manalo’s support for youth empowerment, with a selected give attention to kid’s education, especially amongst indigenous communities.

As the winning representative, print, ramp and industrial model will carry the banner of the Philippines during the Miss Universe pageant scheduled for September in Mexico. CNN noted that her mission is to make a reputation for herself in the nation as a five-time crown holder, following in the footsteps of Gloria Diaz, who won the prestigious title in 1969.

This 12 months’s Miss Universe spectacle will witness a groundbreaking change as over 100 countries will take to the stage with no age restrictions placed on contestants, abolishing the previous 18-28 age requirement. However, the organization has recently come under close scrutiny following the resignation of the reigning Miss USA and Miss Teen USA title holders, citing allegations of poor management, a troubling toxic work culture and conditions which can be detrimental to their mental well-being.
