Kerry Washington knows how social media likes to gossip, and he or she takes it in stride.

The actress poked fun on the constant chatter about her friendship with former co-star Tony Goldwyn with a “Black Wife Effect” Instagram post about their “Scandal” characters. The Black Wife Effect social media trend highlights how romantic partners have improved their lives, style, and/or careers after marrying a Black woman.

Washington shared the montage photos of Goldwyn from his early years before he appeared alongside her on “Scandal,” and photos of him when he starred on the hit series, where he played Olivia Pope’s love interest, Grant Fitzgerald.

“Tony! I have improved your life in so many ways #BlackWifeEffect and today I am adding one more,” Washington captioned the video.

“Update your voter registration status to REGISTERED 😜. I love you!!!!!! #RegisterAFriendDay #Olitz,” she added, encouraging her followers to register to vote in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Goldwyn replied to the post, writing, “I’d be lost without you sq…🤣 Sign up NOW!🙌❤️.”

Washington and Goldyn have maintained a robust friendship since their run on Shondaland ended in 2018. “Scandal” premiered in 2012 and broke the mold with a big fan base and weekly trends on X (formerly often known as Twitter). Washington won the Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series 2013 AND 2014 for the role of Olivia Pope, a handyman from Washington.

The actress was also nominated for an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for her role on the seven-season series. Scandal fans were torn about Olivia and Fitz’s relationship on the show. Some people rooted for this couple, others hated this couple. Washington said Entertainment Weekly back then, she loved debating with fans.

“There are people who don’t really think Olivia and Fitz should be together,” Washington said in a 2015 interview. “Whether they are Olake (Olivia and Jake) or they just don’t think it’s the healthiest relationship… there are a lot of voices out there. But I really love that our fans are emotionally invested and I’m excited to be on the rollercoaster with them. Some will be delighted, others will be sickened – and I am ready for it!”
