Inspired by Zendaya’s “tennis core” revival? These black brands will help you serve
Before the “cowboy core” got here to town or the over-the-top charm of “Mob Wives” hit the mainstream, and even before the new pink Barbiecore takeover, there was a “tennis core.”
A variation of “quiet luxury,” which usually involves people donning collared sportswear appropriate for serving on the court, appears on occasion. After fueling the “preppy” movement within the ’80s and resurfacing within the early aughts, the aesthetic has regained prominence in 2022. Does Zendaya – or slightly “Tashi,” the actor’s character within the upcoming tennis drama “Challengers” – have anything to do with Therefore, the trend is ripe for a rematch.
Zendaya dazzled with the series stylishly camp look in the course of the ‘Challengers’ press tour. while paying homage to black tennis legends by recreating Althea Gibson’s white sneakers and Iconic photo session of Venus and Serena Williams from 1998 for Vogue. During her last press visit, she didn’t miss a single volley. Now it’s fans’ turn to get in on the motion.
Law Roach, Zendaya’s longtime stylist and “image architect,” is asking on fans to revive the trend en masse ahead of the film’s April 26 release.
“I hope you enjoy the whole lot that makes up Challengers, the whole lot that’s on the core of tennis. I’m so glad you’re following this press tour, but I even have a favor,” the award-winning stylist began in a video posted on the web site X.
He continued: “I would be delighted, my love, because when you go to the cinema on April 26, you will be wearing your tennis core.”
Roach wants those that attend shows for his or her best sneaker to post their looks on social media with the hashtag “#TashiMadeMeWearIt.”
“I’ll send you out again and evaluate your outfits. Maybe yes, maybe no,” he said, zooming out and in for comic and dramatic effect. “Let’s have some fun. Let’s all get our tennis core on. Let’s go support Zendaya.”
Fortunately, tennis core is a reasonably easy style to master. The aesthetic typically includes sweaters tied over polo shirts and collared tank tops, visors, pleated skirts, and, after all, loads of tennis white. The clothes are functional, but typically stylish, even designer; considering how exclusive the game was and stays, it’s inherently synonymous with luxury. Bougie-girl style icons just like the “Fresh Prince” fashion plate. Hilary Banks (each versions) should come to mind.
Whether you wish to comply with Tashi’s demands, or you’re inspired to select up a racquet and hit the court for a game of tennis, pickleball, or something else (where are you in racquetball, where are you?), there are several Black-owned brands who support you.
