Morgan Price made history as the first athlete from a historically black college or university (HBCU) to win a national collegiate gymnastics championship.

On Friday, Price represented Fisk University at the 2024 USA Gymnastics Women’s Team Championships in West Chester, Pennsylvania. With a powerful overall rating of 39.225, Price secured the title and have become “USAG’s first collegiate national champion from an HBCU,” as USA Gymnastics announced.

The gymnast’s path to this historic victory began when she joined Fisk University’s first HBCU intercollegiate gymnastics team in 2023 after graduating from highschool. Initially intending to attend Arkansas, Price transferred to Fisk to be considered one of the first gymnasts to compete at an HBCU.

Price’s title in the U.S. Women’s Collegiate All-Around Gymnastics Championship is a very important moment for the sport and for Fisk, who was first HBCU to launch an NCAA gymnastics team.

Since then, the Fisk gymnastics team has gained widespread attention, competing on platforms similar to ESPN and selling out games, marking a major milestone in HBCU athletics.

“Ever since I was younger, I always wanted to be an HBCU gymnast,” Price told Sports Illustrated in 2022. “I just never had the opportunity because there weren’t HBCUs on the gymnastics team. So once I saw this chance arose, I used to be very excited.

“I knew right away that I wanted to be part of this team.”

After Price’s historic win, her team celebrated with a social media post saying, “PRICE IS RIGHT. Engrave her name in the HISTORY BOOKS.
