We think we all know quite a bit about our favourite celebrity couples, but sometimes they surprise us with their mysterious behavior. Kerry Washington has gone to great lengths to keep her romance with husband Nnamdi Asomugha out of the highlight, including pinning her engagement ring to her underwear.

Washington and the previous NFL player are looking forward to their eleventh wedding anniversary in June, and the high-spirited actress recently opened up about the creative ways she’s kept their relationship protected from the prying eyes of the general public.

The incredibly secretive couple was rarely seen together, so after they tied the knot in a non-public ceremony in 2013, it was easy to forget that that they had been dating for 4 years, ever since they met on Broadway’s “Race,” starring Washington. She said the award-winning actress and Asomugha were dating during a “really crazy time” of their lives. She was in the middle of public attention, having recently broken off her engagement to actor David Moskva, which was widely reported within the press.

Meanwhile, during their courtship, Asomugha landed on the quilt of Sports Illustrated. He has been named to multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams and has already established himself as one among the best Oakland Raiders players of all time. Keeping their engagement a secret would appear not possible, but Washington had some amazing tricks up her sleeve.

“I was pinning my engagement ring to my underwear because I loved it so much, so I would sleep in it and then in the morning I would pin it to my underwear so no one would notice that we were engaged,” she explained during a recent appearance on SiriusXM “This is my life with James Corden.”

“I believe it’s really hard when people have quite a bit to say about your relationship and I used to be at a very public event and when it was over I discovered myself within the unlucky situation of being on the quilt of a bridal magazine and it was bridal magazine that got here out quarterly, so I walked around for three months and thought, ‘I believe I’m done talking publicly about my personal life,'” she revealed to Corden.

Washington remains to be very private and barely posts information about her husband on social media. In one throwback photo on her Instagram, Washington and Asomugha are photographed alongside Barack and Michelle Obama in a sweet birthday post to the president. Yet one among her fans I used to be wondering, “Is this Kerry Washington’s husband? What a child…”

The Golden Globe winner has been interviewed countless times since her wedding, and the mentions of Asomughi are few and much between – but they’re all the time incredibly thoughtful, and he’s her rock.

“I am with (him) in my immediate truth. These mirrors are important because they help me come back to myself,” she said in March 2023 interview with “Marie Claire” to discuss her book “Thicker than water.” In her memoir, Washington courageously opened up about her past suicidal thoughts, learning that her dad was not her biological father, her eating disorder and childhood trauma, and how she overcame these struggles to embrace “her true self, and with it a deeper sense of self-worth.” belonging.”

Although Washington is sharing her story with the general public more often, she stays committed to protecting the lives of her children and husband. She has never posted a photograph of herself and Asomughi’s three children on social media. They have a 17-year-old daughter from Asomugha’s previous relationship, in addition to daughter Isabelle (8) and son Caleb (6).

That makes her candid interview on SiriusXM all of the more surprising. She revealed some inspiring recommendations on how she approaches motherhood. “We really value honesty in our house – we predict about it often. We also don’t desire to overwhelm our children, so there aren’t any bad questions (and) there aren’t any fallacious questions. We try to construct a culture in our house where it’s okay to ask questions,” she said.

When asked by Corden to select an item that defines her, Washington mentioned seashells she collected on her honeymoon after her 2013 wedding. The two stayed at an island resort off the coast of Zanzibar, which she said were “the happiest two weeks of my life.” Her justification for selecting the shell collection is a sweet declaration of affection:

“Every time I look at this collection of shells, I am reminded of the space we gave each other to begin our lives together in this truly sacred way,” she said. “You know, having this kind of very private, secret wedding and then just jumping into this very remote place to really start our life together. I love it. I love this jar. I always feel grateful for the life I have.”

Like her “Scandal” character, Olivia Pope, Washington loves a little bit of mystery, and it seems to be working.
