Ethiopian pair Uma and Fikir win the men’s and women’s Paris Marathon at their first attempt

Mulugeta Uma clocks in at 2 hours, 5 minutes and 33 seconds; Fikir wins after 2 hours, 5 minutes and 45 seconds

PARIS (AP) Ethiopian runners Mulugeta Uma and Mestawut Fikir won the men’s and women’s Paris Marathons in their first attempt on Sunday.

Uma had full freedom on her technique to the finish line, but almost collided with the judge approaching the final corner. He was driving straight when the official steered him to the right, almost knocking Uma off balance.

Uma quickly regained her balance and pointed to the crowd celebrating.

He set a winning time of two hours, 5 minutes and 33 seconds, ahead of the Kenyan pair of Titus Kipruto (2:05.48) and 2021 champion Elisha Rotich (2:06.54).

Fikir was pushed harder than Uma and overtook compatriot Enat Tirusew only on her home stage.

Tirusev was right next to her as Fikir casually glanced at her watch, then rushed to victory 2:20:45with Tirusev three seconds behind.

40-year-old Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot – multiple Olympic and world championship medalist in 5,000 and 10,000 meters – took third place with a time of two:21.46.
