Vaughan Gething is the first black head of government in Europe
Vaughan Gething, a Zambian-born lawyer, became the first black head of government in Europe and the first black head of government in the UK after he was elected by the Welsh Parliament and confirmed by King Charles III on March 20.
Geting recognized this story, issuing an announcement on March 21 shortly after taking office: “Today we turn a page in the book of our nation’s history – a history we are writing together,” Gething said. “Not only because I have the honor of becoming the first black leader of any European country, but because the generational shield has been skipped.”
The 50-year-old is the first leader of Wales born after Britain transferred some powers to its former subjects in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which began in 1990 following public votes.
The votes resulted in the countries ultimately being given responsibility for local government, while England stays accountable for national matters similar to defence, foreign relations and others.
Gething is the latest non-white British leader, following the elections in England and Scotland of Rishi Sunak, prime minister of Indian descent, and Scottish first minister Humza Yousaf, who is of Pakistani descent. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland is ruled by two women. This implies that there aren’t any white men at the top of the political pyramid in any country in the UK.
Gething’s election, he told lawmakers on March 20, is each a “matter of pride” and a “daunting responsibility,” but he also promised that Wales could be a spot where its residents could “celebrate our differences and be proud of all those things” that connect us.”
In addition to Gething, other leaders have been reported to have included Keir Starmer, leader of the British Labor Party, and former Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones recognized the importance of Geting’s position.
Starmer told the website: “His appointment as First Minister of Wales and the first black leader of the UK will be a historic moment that speaks to the progress and values of modern Wales.”
Jones said the achievement must be a source of national pride, saying: “It’s something we can be very proud of in Wales.”
Meanwhile, outgoing leader of Wales Mark Drakeford has pledged to work with Gething as part of the campaign to deliver quality leadership to the country: “He (Gething) will provide the party with a brand new generation of leadership and I sit up for campaigning with him to deliver a British Labor government that Wales I would like it so desperately.”
