Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are potential wins for the Pittsburgh Steelers
The public nature of knowledgeable athlete’s profession path allows us to watch and consider how we might react in similar circumstances.
Despite the enormous salaries that make change easier to swallow, athletes are subject to the same laws of human nature that all of us face. Moving from one employer to a different and adjusting to life in a brand new city with a brand new boss and latest co-workers can bring a flood of mixed emotions – especially as a quarterback, the most prestigious position in sports.
One day you get chopped up and thrown away like rotten leftovers, but the next day you join a famous franchise to revive your popularity. That was the story of Russell Wilson last week Signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’ll be smiling irrespective of where he lands – the Denver Broncos owe it to him $39 millionand he still has Ciara – but now he’ll be playing under Mike Tomlin, who’s second amongst energetic NFL coaches and thirteenth on the all-time list in his 173-year profession.
Or sooner or later, the organization that drafted you’ll trade you, ending months of speculation about your immediate future in the NFL. This was the case with Justin Fields, who spent three years in Chicago without proving himself as a franchise QB. The Bears wish to try another person, so they’ll on Saturday fields sent to Pittsburgh, where Wilson was just beginning to feel comfortable as the presumptive starter.
“Let’s get this done, Justin Fields!” Wilson he tweeted after trading. “The QB room may be on fire.”
We would expect nothing less from Wilson, sometimes accused of being too banal and corporate. He didn’t select the Steelers as his backup quarterback, but he knew there can be competition. He just thought it could come from Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh’s starter last yr.
“I look forward to competing and being the best version of myself every day,” Wilson he said reporters last week before Pickett was traded to Philadelphia. “That’s the best part. This is what you bring to the table.”
Beating Pickett can be easier than defeating Fields, who managed to do it shown flashing being an exceptional player. Fields apparently expressed lack of interest in 4 teams who desired to trade for him, deciding to take a likelihood on Tomlin and Wilson. He could have done loads worse along with his selection of head coach and potential mentor.

Chicago never offered him much support, giving Fields two coaches, two offensive coordinators and dozens of lousy teammates. But he was gracious. “Thank you to the entire Bears organization and ownership for allowing me to be a part of such a historic franchise,” he added he tweeted. “…I can’t thank you all enough for what you’ve meant to me over the last 3 years, through the ups and downs. I wish each of you every success. Ready for the next chapter!”
One QB (Wilson) is a nine-time Pro Bowler with a Super Bowl ring and a borderline Hall of Famer who’s trying to stop his downward trend since leaving Seattle. The other (Fields) is a first-round pick who’s just 25 years old and just joined Lamar Jackson and Cam Newton on the NFL shortlist: players who’ve thrown a minimum of 40 touchdown passes and 2,000 rushing yards of their first three seasons.
Whatever everyone feels inside must filter through extensive external opinions. All this noise would give me a headache if I let it.
There are too many conflicting reports and rumors to know who’s telling the truth. One account indicates that Pittsburgh signed Wilson longer contract after his one-year deal expires this yr. Another article says the Steelers aren’t really committed to Wilson and will proceed to be cut it if Fields wins the starting job in training camp. Each player only has what the organization tells him, and that is what matters until it happens.
Assuming each of them agrees to be a substitute, there isn’t a drawback for either the team or any of the players. Sixty-six quarterbacks recorded a start last season in the NFL. Chances are each Wilson and Fields will see the field this yr for health or performance reasons.
As reported by Tomlin he told Fields that Wilson will enter training camp as a starter. I am unable to imagine a team that has two more motivated QBs. Wilson may thoroughly be cooked once his profession is over. Fields may never develop into the quarterback we see glimpses of. If iron sharpens iron, Wilson and Fields can slice and dice like no other duo.
The ideal scenario is that each play well when called upon and Fields takes over next season – after testing the market via free agency. Wilson will assume a full-time backup role in 2025 unless he decides to hold them up and spend time along with his wife.
This is a win-win situation for the team and the QB. Either way, we’ll get to observe all of it play out.
Don’t forget the popcorn.
