Killer Mike, Lil Jon, Jermaine Dupri, Too Short and other hip-hop artists tell their stories about attending one in all the biggest parties of all time.

“Freaknik” is basically a music documentary, says P. Frank Williams, the film’s director and executive producer. he told Variety. “Luke (Luther Campbell) is the Freaknik soundtrack, (Dupri’s) So So Def label is directly related to Freaknik, and 21 Savage is new school — they’re into the wild stuff we did and the clothes and music of that era.”

“Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told” takes a closer look at the festival’s impact on uplifting Black culture, joy and empowerment. While the coming-of-age story covers the demise of Atlanta’s iconic street party, the documentary explores its cultural significance that has endured for generations.

“Arrivals, cars, sexuality, joy, daisy princes – that’s what sweetness is,” Williams continued to Variety. “But there is also some vegetables in it – that is, Black empowerment, which was a part of police brutality, the realization of Black culture, young women realizing their sexuality, young men as well. Freaknik is really a coming-of-age story about a generation trying to find a voice in a world that didn’t accept them – but it was a place of their own making. Freaknik is the ultimate embodiment of this.”

The trailer features footage of individuals attending the annual spring break celebration. The preview also includes additional interviews about Freaknik’s legacy with the event’s founders, politicians and partygoers.

“The legacy of Freaknik really began in 1983. “I don’t know if people realized that,” Williams he said. “It was about kids trying to find a place for black joy. Freaknik wasn’t just about partying: our goal was to show how it affected politics, culture, race, there were a lot of issues related to sexuality and gender.”

The film’s executive producers include Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, Jermaine Dupri, 21 Savage, Terry “TR” Ross, Melissa Cooper, Alex Avant and Tresa Sanders, Geraldine L Porras and P. Frank Williams.
