Lena Waithe thinks Mary Brock Akil’s ‘Girlfriends’ paved the way to the 2024 Oscars
Lena Waithe is the Emmy-winning, Tony-nominated actress, producer and screenwriter behind such hits as “The Chi” and “Twenties.” But 20 years ago, she was a newly minted assistant searching for her first likelihood. Enter Mara Brock Akil.
“You know, that was my first job on set,” Waithe revealed on the red carpet at the Dolby Theater. “I believe there are individuals who might think, ‘Oh, I can consider just a few (other) defining moments, Lena.’ But for me it was a terrific opportunity. That was the starting that led to all the other cool things I could mention, but this one was really special. Mara Brock Akil whom I like.”
Waithe not only praised Akil on the Oscars red carpet, but in addition expressed her appreciation for several Black actors and creators who’ve been nominated or honored this awards season. She said the 2024 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards were especially special to her because she was friends with a few of the winners, including Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks and “All American” executive producer Nkechi Carroll.
Waithe further gushed about being a Black creator in Hollywood, saying the community gives her a way of “joy.”
“I love being Black,” the screenwriter said. “Yes, though working in Hollywood could be frustrating. I like coming, playing, being a component of this industry, this community and telling stories that touch people and stick with them. Because I used to be a one who benefited from these sorts of stories, which stick in my mind and move me too.
Looking to the future, Waithe will proceed to tell these stories. The sixth season, part two of her hit Showtime series “The Chi,” debuts May 12. The latest season will feature several latest talented solid members, including “A Different World” alum Kadeem Hardison, “Cool Runnings” actor Leon and “On My Block” star Brett Gray.
