How gym owner Jaliyla Tillman empowers women through it –
Jaliyla Tillman is breaking barriers and empowering women through fitness at Mission Slimpossible, the 24-hour gym she founded in 2022. As the owner of this women-owned facility, Tillman creates a singular space for women, especially minority women, to embrace their fitness journey and construct confidence within the gym.
According to a recent article published by the American Cancer Society, black and African American women usually tend to develop cancer less physically energetic in comparison with white women. About 38% of non-Hispanic black women reported little or no involvement in leisure-time physical activity, versus 23% of non-Hispanic white women.
Tillman, a graduate of Hampton University, experienced metabolic changes coupled with hormonal changes from contraception that resulted in significant weight gain after graduation when she was in her early 20s. Determined to not turn into an additional, Tillman devoted herself to the gym and in 2020 became an authorized fitness instructor. Three years later, she opened the doors to the primary black women-owned fitness facility in Washington, D.C.’s Glover Park neighborhood
As a part of Women’s History Month, Tillman shares her observations about overcoming gym anxiety, supporting the fitness community, and celebrating small fitness victories.
Gym bullying
“Gym anxiety,” the sensation of hysteria about joining or going to a gym, is more common than you would possibly think. A recent study within the UK found that just about half of women experience feelings of judgment when exercising, with 37% expressing concern that other people may perceive them as inappropriate for exercising on the gym.
Tillman’s journey into fitness entrepreneurship was born out of private struggles and triumphs. Reflecting on her experiences, she notes: “I wasn’t initially into fitness or the gym. It was only after college that my metabolism changed and I realized that I needed to increase my physical activity.”
Struggling with weight fluctuations, Tillman found solace in a kickboxing gym and eventually lost 35 kilos. However, setbacks related to her weight and body acceptance continued. “I have never been obese, but I had to learn to appreciate the composition of my body and find the fitness path that was right for me,” says Tillman.
The top 10 reasons women avoid exercising include feeling too intimidated (25%), anxious about looking unfit (21%), and anxious about what other people think (19%).
“Once I accepted myself, I gained more and more confidence every time I walked into the gym,” Tillman noted enthusiastically.
This newfound confidence and mindset led Tillman to rediscover her passion for fitness and earn her trainer certification, which she accomplished in 2020 and opened her gym shortly thereafter.
Creating a friendly environment on the gym
Research has shown this few barriers, including individual, interpersonal, social and environmental influences, limit women’s participation in physical activity. Perceptions of body image, concerns about hair care, adherence to gender norms, and fear of sexual stereotypes and family responsibilities are issues which might be particular to Black or African American women.
Central to Mission Slimpossible’s ethos is making a supportive and inclusive environment where women feel comfortable and supported. Tillman emphasizes the importance of her presence on this space, stating, “I make sure that when you walk in, there’s a nice, female-friendly face at the door.”
At the center of Mission Slimpossible’s mission is to create an exercise environment that’s uplifting, not anxiety-inducing. “The fear of being judged by others is real and often causes ‘intimidation’ and hesitation,” Tillman recalls. “Our values are based on the concept exercise is about self-perception, not outward appearance. Regardless of your body shape, fitness level or size, we welcome you to Mission Slimpossible.
Supporting the community and celebrating small victories
In addition to physical changes, Tillman emphasizes the importance of celebrating small victories and developing a way of community within the gym. “It’s not just about losing weight anymore,” he explains. “It’s about celebrating every achievement, whether you go down a dress size or increase your water intake.”
Through initiatives just like the Wall of Small Victories, where members share their achievements, Mission Slimpossible cultivates a supportive environment where people feel seen, heard and encouraged.
“Recognizing and celebrating each milestone allows women to enjoy their progress and stay motivated on their exercise journey,” Tillman recalled.
Redefining the worth of efficiency
Tillman disputes the notion that black or African American women will proceed to be less physically energetic than their white counterparts. “We must accept our essence and know that physical activity is the highest form of self-care and an investment in ourselves for everyone on the planet,” he says.
Recognizing the barriers that Black or African American women face, Tillman emphasizes the intrinsic value of prioritizing well-being. “I want you to repay me with great health and vitality,” he emphasizes. Through his approach to fitness, Tillman changes the narrative by highlighting the transformative impact of prioritizing health and well-being.
