President Joe Biden rallied his supporters and fellow Democrats in his impassioned State of the Union speech on Thursday, promising to advance the work he’s doing on key issues, but one moment that followed his remarks drew a number of attention online.

After Biden left the stage and greeted several lawmakers and guests in attendance, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene led the group to speak to the president in regards to the murder of faculty student Laken Riley.

When Biden spotted the Georgia Republican, he seemed shocked by the representative’s presence, perhaps by the outfit she selected that evening. Greene wore a striking all-red outfit, accessorized with a red MAGA hat, a red blazer and a shirt that read, “Say her name Laken Riley.”

This reaction was recorded on camera and published on the Internet, where it collected 1000’s of views.

Greene also caused a little bit of a stir in the course of Biden’s speech when she interrupted a part of his remarks by yelling, “What about Laken Riley?”

After the disruption, several people in the group began booing Greene, but Biden took time to respond to Greene and stated that she was “an innocent young woman killed by an illegal perpetrator,” while offering his condolences to her parents.

He lifted the white button, paused and said the young woman’s name, but mispronounced it, calling her “Lincoln Riley,” later exposing himself to criticism from Republicans.

More than two weeks ago, 22-year-old Laken Riley was killed on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens. Riley was a nursing student on the campus of Augusta University in Athens.

Jose Ibarra was arrested and charged together with her murder. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Ibarra, 26, is a Venezuelan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022.

Police don’t imagine Riley and Ibarra knew one another beforehand. Her murder quickly sparked political unrest and a national discussion in regards to the country’s immigration policies and the illegal immigrants currently within the U.S.

Before SOTU, House Republicans passed the “Laken Riley Act,” which might require the detention of any migrant with a history of burglary or theft.

Riley’s parents were invited to SOTU by Republican Mike Collins of Georgia, but declined his invitation.

While it’s typical in the course of the State of the Union speech to be cheered and jeered by federal lawmakers reacting to the president’s remarks, the speech isn’t often marred by this degree of taunts.

When Greene finally approached Biden after his speech, she handed him a button and asked Biden to say Laken Riley’s name, to which he replied, “I know how to pronounce that name.”

Biden’s speech included remarks on topics including abortion rights, border security, the Israel-Hamas war, gun rights and tax increases on the rich. In an attempt to energize his audience and galvanize his voter base, he spoke with impassioned political rhetoric and a tone that differed from his usual genteel and mild demeanor.

Biden never mentioned Donald Trump by name, calling him only “my predecessor,” but sought to distinguish himself from the GOP frontrunner and focus directly on the problems that Trump and his Republican supporters stand for.
