The United States issues a Level 3 travel advisory for Jamaica
The US government has issued a Level 3 travel advisory for Jamaica as a result of a rise in violent crime.
“Violent crimes such as home burglaries, armed robberies, sexual assaults and murders are common. Sexual assaults are common, including at all-inclusive resorts,” warns the warning issued on January 24.
A Level 3 advisory, as categorized by the State Department’s rating system, signals increased risk and recommends that individuals completely re-evaluate travel plans.
Island saw 65 murders in January 2023 – Second highest on the earth in line with World Population Review. The guide also points out that victims may face obstacles when reporting a crime to the authorities.
“Local police often do not respond effectively to serious crime incidents. When arrests do occur, cases rarely end in a final verdict. Families of U.S. citizens who die in accidents or homicides often wait a year or more for final death certificates to be issued by Jamaican authorities.”
Antony Anderson, Commissioner of Police of Jamaica, he said that the police are taking motion to extend security by employing more law enforcement officials. Jamaican officials also indicated that since January 2023, homicides have decreased by almost 20%.
This is the second travel warning for a Caribbean island in as many days. US Embassy issued a level two warning for the Bahamas. This is a response to the rise within the variety of murders on the island. The U.S. Embassy cites “retaliatory gang violence” because the reason behind most murders. They also stated that almost all of the violence occurs on the islands of New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport). They are warning travelers to pay attention to their surroundings and be especially careful when staying in facilities that are usually not secure.
If you intend to travel to Jamaica or the Bahamas, the Department of State recommends that Americans purchase travel insurance, including medical evacuation insurance. They also encourage travelers join STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program), which might make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
