Russell Westbrook promises to build 180 affordable homes in South Los Angeles
NBA star and Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook is making a splash on the basketball court and leaving an indelible mark on the community that raised him. According to Being, a nine-time NBA All-Star generally known as “Mr. Triple Double” recently announced its commitment to build 180 affordable homes in South Los Angeles, a community close to its heart.
Westbrook, originally from South Los Angeles, found its way to Instagram share this significant development that goes beyond an easy financial investment. The project is predicted to take shape on a plot of land that’s historically significant since it was the location of in depth destruction in the course of the civil unrest in South Los Angeles following the brutal beating of Rodney King by LAPD officers on March 3, 1991.
The initiative, called Project Evermont, is a three way partnership with Target as a key partner. The development will provide affordable housing and include community-focused businesses, supporting a holistic approach to community development. In a video posted to Instagram, Westbrook shared the vision for Evermont with City Councilwoman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Elle Perrault of the Vermont Knolls Residents Association and Pastor Jeffrey Lewis of New Antioch Church of God.
“Evermont” is a model of cooperation between the town, county, local and business communities. “This is a perfect example of what happens when we come together to empower and create the positive change this community has been waiting for,” Westbrook said in the video.
The announcement comes as the town approaches the thirty second anniversary of the beating of Rodney King, a pivotal moment in history that brought attention to the systemic injustices faced by Black communities. Westbrook’s initiative marks a transformative step toward rebuilding and strengthening the South Los Angeles community.
City Councilor Harris-Dawson praised Westbrook’s commitment, saying, “Russell Westbrook doesn’t just invest in housing; is investing in the long run of South Los Angeles. The Evermont project is not going to only provide affordable homes, but can even create a vibrant community with growth opportunities for local businesses.
Westbrook’s Evermont initiative reflects his commitment to making a long-lasting impact on the community that shaped him. It demonstrates the potential for positive change when sports activists use their influence to uplift and empower marginalized communities.
