CBS Develops First Black Daytime Soap in 35 Years: ‘The Gates’
The daytime soap opera gets a brand new face. CBS has announced “The Gates,” a series that has the potential to develop into the primary daytime soap opera with a predominantly black forged in 35 years.
According to (*35*) reporterThe series will happen in a “posh, gated community” and can follow the lives of a wealthy black family living there. The series can be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production enterprise in association with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.
Daytime Emmy winner Michele Val Jean (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) will write the series and function showrunner. Over the course of her profession, Val Jean has written “over 2,000 episodes of daytime television.”
“‘The Gates’ will be everything we love about daytime dramas, from a new and fresh perspective,” Sheila Ducksworth, president of the NAACP’s CBS Studios enterprise, shared in a press release obtained by The (*35*) Reporter.
“This series will celebrate an audience that has traditionally been underserved and could be a watershed moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and a center for black culture, “The Gates” may have influential representation, which can be certainly one of the important thing touchstones of the enterprise.

The last daytime soap opera with a primarily black forged, notes The (*35*) Reporter, was “Generations.” The series premiered in 1989 as a half-hour drama and made history as the primary American television series to concentrate on a black family from the start. Fox’s hit series “Empire” can also be considered a soap opera, but as a substitute of a soap opera, it was a primetime drama.
